my plan for this race was to just worry about one leg at a time and not try to pace myself. at all. as a result, i died a painful death in the last leg. i was in the last wave to go off (it contained all of the non-elite women). i led the 1st run and was well into the bike before i got passed for the first time (maybe 4 miles?). my biking is really weak, so i’m always kind of riding in fear of someone coming up from behind and blowing by me because i know it’s just a matter of time. this happened 8 times and i finished the bike leg in 9th place. i really worked hard on the bike though so my legs were totally shot for the second run. i also got lost in the transition area and had to dance around for a while before finding the exit, which didn’t help matters. in the last duathlon my running legs came back after about 1/4 mile, but in this one they never did. it was 3.1 miles of awkwardness and me telling myself to go harder, but without a response. i did end up passing 2 women which upped my final position to 7th. i finished first in my age group, and since i finished first in the last duathlon i won the series (despite not competing in the first race), which was pretty cool. i think 3 consecutive days of riding got to my derriere though…sitting the rest of the day was a painful ordeal.
